Pakistan to Introduce Its First Fully Digital Transport System in Rawalpindi

Pakistan is poised to launch its first-ever fully digital transport system in Rawalpindi, marking a significant step forward in modernizing public transportation in the country. According to a report from a national daily,

Pakistan to Introduce Its First Fully Digital Transport System in Rawalpindi

the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will spearhead the development of the software required for this innovative project.

This ambitious initiative involves the creation of a centralized control room and the installation of an electronic tagging (e-tag) system at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal. The e-tag system will be responsible for collecting comprehensive data on all vehicles using the terminal. This data will include crucial details such as vehicle registration numbers, ownership information, vehicle colors, fitness certificates, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and tracking information.

The control room will play a pivotal role in monitoring the movement of vehicles entering and exiting the terminal. By ensuring that only vehicles meeting the necessary safety and service standards are allowed to operate, the system aims to enhance the overall efficiency and safety of public transportation. This digital transport system, inspired by similar models in cities like Paris, London, and various parts of the United States, is the first of its kind in Pakistan. If successful, there are plans to expand the system to other cities across Punjab.

One of the standout features of this new digital system is the ability for citizens to submit complaints online concerning public and government transport services. This will provide a more streamlined and accessible platform for addressing grievances, thereby improving the overall quality of service.

Rashid Ali, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting it as a major leap forward for the region's transportation infrastructure. He noted that the Punjab Government has been instrumental in providing the necessary IT support for the initiative. Senior officials from both the IT and Transport departments are scheduled to visit Rawalpindi on September 2 to finalize the project's details, signaling the imminent rollout of this groundbreaking transport system.

With this new digital transport system, Rawalpindi is set to lead the way in transforming Pakistan's public transportation into a more modern, efficient, and user-friendly service, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
