iPhone 16 / iPhone 16 Plus: Key Camera Changes

Primary Camera Specs Remain Consistent

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to maintain their dual rear lens setups, featuring a 48-megapixel primary camera with a wide f/1.6 aperture. This setup will continue to offer 1x and 2x “optical quality” zoom, alongside the familiar 0.5x ultrawide camera. While the primary camera specs remain unchanged, the combination ensures reliable performance for everyday photography.

New Camera Layout

One of the more noticeable changes in the iPhone 16 models is the repositioning of the two rear lenses from a diagonal to a vertical alignment. This shift, similar to the layout seen on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, is designed to reduce parallax shifting when switching between cameras, particularly during video zooming. Additionally, this new vertical alignment could make it possible to capture immersive spatial video for Apple’s Vision Pro headset, a feature currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

Improved Ultrawide Lens

The 12-megapixel ultrawide camera on the iPhone 16 series is expected to be upgraded with a brighter f/2.2 lens, an improvement over the current f/2.4 aperture. Although the difference may seem minor, the new lens is expected to allow around 19% more light, resulting in sharper and clearer images, especially in low-light conditions.

New Macro Photography Mode

For the first time, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are likely to feature a macro photography mode, previously available only on the Pro models. This suggests the addition of an autofocus ultrawide camera, enabling close-up shots with sharp focus—a significant upgrade from the basic iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
